Tucker’s Origins

Tucker’s Kozy Korner was founded in 1948 by John Tucker just a block away from downtown San Antonio. It originally began as a small neighborhood stand serving hot dogs, hamburgers, and drinks to locals before gradually evolving into a tavern and live-music venue. Opening during the era of Jim Crow segregation, Tucker’s provided a welcoming space for San Antonio’s Black community at a time when many downtown establishments were unwelcoming. As the surrounding area’s nightlife and culture grew, the Kozy Korner became a popular gathering place where residents socialized and enjoyed live music, helping shape its identity as a cornerstone of the community. Over time, it transitioned from a simple food spot into one of San Antonio’s most enduring historic bars, known for its intimate atmosphere and deep roots in the city’s musical and social history.

Through the decades, Tucker’s Kozy Korner built a lasting reputation as an authentic spot where live music and community connection took center stage. Generations of patrons passed through its doors, drawn by its laid-back charm, late-night performances, and sense of tradition that remained largely unchanged. It stands as a meaningful piece of San Antonio history — remembered for the spirit of its founder and the stories, music, and culture that lived within its walls.
